My Education Background
I have been in education for 20+ years; 15 years in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District in Charlotte, NC and 5+ years in the Clover School District in Clover, SC. I have taught grades 7-9 mathematics, been an elementary and middle school assistant principal, and an elementary principal. Now, I am a technology integration specialist with the Clover School District, in Clover, SC and am primarily responsible for covering a Middle School but work across the district as needed. We are in our second year of our 1:1 initiative with iPad devices in grades PK-8 (true 1:1 in grades 1-8 and class sets for PK-K) and MacBook Air laptops in grades 9-12.
I am currently certified in NC and SC in grades 6-12 mathematics, PK-12 principal, and as a curriculum supervisor.
I am happily married to a wonderful woman and have three boys ranging from 1st-9th grade. They are tremendous people who make people smile wherever they go. We enjoy spending time together, playing with Legos, card games, and exploring technology. During my free time, I enjoy watching TV, reading motivational fable books (Jon Gordon, Ken Blanchard, etc.), and playing on my devices.
Honors and Recognitions
Throughout my professional career, I have been fortunate to have always been on the forefront and to have always been part of something bigger. I have attended numerous conferences and training opportunities taking me across the United States from Boston, MA to Las Vegas, NV. I have presented at local, state, and National conferences on school organization, parent involvement, professional development, and technology.
I was honored with being a top ten finalist for the Sallie Mae New Teacher of the Year in 1995-1996 and nominated for SC Assistant Principal of the Year in 2012-13 by my principal and staff.
In 2008-2009, the school I worked at for 3-1/2 years, Beverly Woods Elementary School, was named a National School of Character. It was great being part of that process even though I changed schools before the award was made.
This past summer, I was fortunate to be on the winning Iron Chef team at ISTE2014 with a design for an app based on digital citizenship. I met a great group of people that welcomed me in and we won!
My Blogging Purpose
I have thought about blogging for a while but just never made the time. I often read blogs but skimmed through because so many were so long. That is what made me think to try and write smaller blogs. A Quick Byte was born after I attended ISTE2014 and I realized that I was part of a movement, a new direction in education, and I wanted to share my story. Along the way, I thought I would share some insight from my side of the world through tips and tricks, book and app reviews, and some random thoughts here and there about technology in education.
